Stocks are edging mostly higher on Wall Street, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average further into record territory.

The Dow was up 21 points to 15,783 as of noon Eastern time Monday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 was up a point at 1,771, even with the record high the index reached in late October.

The Nasdaq composite was flat at 3,918.

Investors this week will look for evidence that Americans are ready to start spending for the holidays. Macy's, Wal-Mart, Nordstrom and Kohl's are scheduled to report their quarterly results.

Last week, encouraging news about U.S. hiring lifted the Dow to an all-time high.

Bond markets were closed for the Veterans Day holiday.
