UNION CITY— A North Jersey city mourns the loss of its third police officer since December.

Officer John Kamel died in a motorcycle crash on Kennedy Boulevard on Thursday night  as he headed to work, according to an announcement by the department. He had served since 2013.

NJ.com reported the crash was being investigated by the Hudson County Sheriff's Department and the Prosecutor's Office.

"John loved being a police officer in Union City. Please know that he served the people of Union City, his neighbors, well as a faithful and dedicated member of our department," read a message on the department's Facebook page.

"No words can express our grief and sadness, PO John Kamel taken from us way too soon," Union City police chief Rich Molinari said in a tweet.

A Go Fund Me page was created to help with funeral expenses and support his mother Helen.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Union City Police Sgt. Mark Zeitounian died in an off-duty crash on Route 3 in May. Ricardo Fernandez died suddenly in his home last December.

Kamel graduated from the Bergen County Police Academy in June 2013 as a member of Class 110. Kamel was assigned to the Patrol Division since his graduation from the Police Academy.
