According to authorities, the body was discovered late Monday.

New Jersey Advance Media, citing unnamed sources close to the investigation, reported that body had been severed from its head.

ABC 7 reports that the body is that of 50-year-old Pamela Davis, who has been missing since Oct. 30.

Despite the reports, Essex County prosecutor's Office Spokeswoman Katherine Carter said her office is not yet able to comment on the condition of the remains or provide an identity.

While on patrol, local patrol officers were alerted to a "foul odor" at 803 South 11th Street. They responded to the residence and found a body wrapped in a blanket in the garage.

Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force responded and are continuing to gather additional evidence.

"The investigation is active and ongoing," acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable said in a press release Tuesday. "At this time the cause and manner of death are unknown and the identity of the victim has not been confirmed. Additional information will be released as it becomes available."
