“Unexploded Ordnance” is a Firework at Sandy Hook

Officials say an ordnance found at Sandy Hook turned out to be an unexploded firework.

National Parks Services Spokeswoman Daphne Yun tells The Associated Press that the ordnance was found Wednesday near a ferry dock in the Fort Hancock area. She says the site is not near Sandy Hook’s beaches or the historic areas.

State police crews responded to remove and defuse the ordnance. It was not immediately clear how it ended up at the site.

The ferry dock and a nearby roadway were temporarily closed as a precaution, but had reopened by early Wednesday afternoon.

Several ordnances have been found along the Jersey Shore since Superstorm Sandy hit last fall.
