Under A Million Still Without Power A Week After Sandy [VIDEO]
A week after Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey, just under 1 million customers remain without power.
Public Service Electric & Gas says it could be several days before service is restored to its remaining 439,000 customers.
The company says in a press release they have restored 95 percent of their customers in Burlington, Mercer, Camden and Gloucester counties. As work is completed, crews in South Jersey will be reassigned to work in other parts of the state.
The utility promises that the “majority” of its customers will be back on line by Friday.
PSE+G also reports that 78% of all gas stations in their service area have power as do 80% of the schools.
Jersey Central Power & Light has 393,440 homes and businesses without electricity and says they willl have “the majority” of its customers restored by Wednesday. 60% of its customers have had power restored according to the utility.
“Our response to Hurricane Sandy is the largest mobilization of crews and manpower in the history of JCP&L. Before the storm, we amassed an army of linemen and have doubled their number as more resources became available. State and federal agencies also are helping us respond to the people of New Jersey,” said Don Lynch, President of JCP&L in a press release. “Everyone at JCP&L understands the hardships and frustration of extended power outages. That is why we continue to accept all resources to bring our region’s electricity back quickly and safely.”
In a press release, the company says “6,800 professionals, including 3,500 linemen and 1,400 forestry workers, are focused on restoring power to the remaining customers. An additional 200 linemen are expected today and tomorrow.”
Atlantic City Electric is working to reconnect just over 100 customers while Orange & Rockland reports about 1,077 outages in the northern Jersey counties it serves.
