William F. Owen has led the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for the last four and a half years.

Owens' contract was to have expired in June. But two weeks ago UMDNJ announced he would resign at the end of the month. Owens earns $570,000 per year. The Star-Ledger of Newark reports he'll continue to receive his salary for eight months while serving as a consultant for his successor. That amounts to $380,000.

The separation agreement doesn't say how much consulting work Owens is expected to provide.

The university didn't provide the newspaper with further details.
