Two 18-year-old Newark residents face numerous charges after the carjacked vehicle they were in struck and injured a pedestrian and then crashed into a city storefront.

Hillside police initially tried to stop the vehicle around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday after learning it had been carjacked in Maplewood earlier in the day. But authorities say the driver, 18-year-old Andrew Cappel Jr., sped off and drove into Newark with officers in pursuit.

The pedestrian, identified only as a 48-year-old woman, was hit a short time later. She was being treated at a hospital Tuesday night, but further details on her injuries were not disclosed.

After the car hit the storefront, Cappel and his passenger, Tamanisha Mitchell, tried to flee on foot. But they were soon captured by the Hillside officers.
