Authorities say the separate fatal shootings of two men in northern New Jersey do not appear to be connected.

Essex County prosecutors say Irvington police found 38-year-old Samad Hargrove around 9:30 a.m. Friday when they responded to reports of shots fired in the 100 block of Howard Street. He was taken to a hospital, but died there a short time later.

The second shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. in the area of South Orange and Isabella Avenues in Newark.

Eighteen-year-old city resident Alkawi McCoy was found lying on the sidewalk, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He died a short time later at a hospital.

Both shootings are under investigation by the county's major crimes task force, which includes detectives from the Newark and Irvington police departments.
