Severe weather has forced authorities to temporarily suspend their search for a 16-year-old boy who disappeared while tubing on the Delaware River in northwestern New Jersey.

Hunterdon County prosecutors say the teen and five other people were tubing Wednesday when the boy became separated from his tube shortly before noon. He attempted to swim upstream to retrieve it, but couldn't reach the tube and soon disappeared under the water.

An adult member of the group waived down a passing bicyclist and used their cell phone to call 911.

Boat crews and divers soon arrived on scene and searched the water for a few hours, but were ordered out of the water shortly before severe thunderstorms moved through the area.

Authorities planned to resume the search Wednesday night, once conditions improved.
