Before officially announcing Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate, Donald Trump reportedly offered the vice presidential ballot spot to Gov. Chris Christie, but then rescinded it, the New York Post has reported.

According to the article, just before the Republican National Convention in July, Trump told Christie he was planning to select him as a running mate. The GOP candidate's advisors, however, had other ideas.

Most of Trump’s advisers pressured Trump to pick Pence, arguing that Pence would help unify the Republican party and win the favor of evangelical Christians who failed to support Trump in the primary election, the New York Post reported.

A source told the Post that Trump’s advisers also believed the Bridgegate scandal would be detrimental to the campaign. “He’d lose the advantage of not being corrupt," the source told the New York Post.

During the summer, Trump selected Christie to manage his transition team if Trump gets elected in November.
