Clinton and Trump each won seven states.

Clinton previewed a "love and kindness" message while Trump pressed his case that Clinton is a proven failure.

Exit polls showed Trump piled up victories with strong support from voters who want a candidate who "tells it like it is" and with backing from 4 in 10 voters who want change.

Among Democrats, Clinton amassed victories by drawing support from three-fourths of voters who want someone who will continue President Barack Obama's policies.
