U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the additional disaster relief funds on Thursday.

About $1.3 billion of that will be funneled into resiliency projects that could include elevating storm drains or installing back-up power sources.

The money will be distributed to New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority; the New York City Department of Transportation; New Jersey Transit; and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

It's being allocated by the Federal Transit Administration's Emergency Relief Program.
