NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder says the accident occurred just after noon Wednesday in Montvale. The man, whose name was not released, crawled under a crossing gate as the train approached and put his back to the train.

The engineer sounded the train's horn, but could not stop in time. Witnesses said the man did not try to move out of the train's path.

None of the 20 passengers aboard the train bound for Spring Valley, N.Y. were injured in the accident. But it forced the suspension of train service along the Pascack Valley line between Spring Valley and Woodcliff Lake.

The accident remains under investigation.
