Tractor-trailer driver dies in I-95 crash near George Washington Bridge
A tractor-trailer and a Jeep crashed in the northbound lanes of I-95 early Friday, killing the truck driver and blocking traffic approaching I-80 and the George Washington Bridge.
New Jersey State Police said the accident took place just before 5 a.m. near Ridgefield Park when Thomas Andrews, 58, of Keyport, lost control of his Jeep and hit the median. A tractor tractor hauling a load of Tropicana orange juice could not stop in time, hit the Jeep and overturned blocking both the local and express lanes close to where I-95 meets I-80 heading for the George Washington Bridge.
The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene while Thomas was taken to Hackensack Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
The express lanes remain closed as the investigation and clean up of the accident continues.
PIX 11 reports that fuel leaking from the vehicles was flowing down the highway and drivers in stopped traffic were told by police to turn off their engines.
There is heavy guardrail damage from the impact of the accident according to PIX 11.
