Toms River native pulls man out of Florida car fire
A Florida HIghway Patrolman who pulled an unconscious driver from a burning car is originally from Toms River.
"Great work Trooper Robert Duckers!! We are proud of you back home," reads a post on the Toms River PBA Facebook page. Druckers is a graduate of the Toms River South class of 2011 and 126th Florida Highway Patrol Academy class which graduated in January 2014.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Duckers was helping a disabled driver on Monday night when he saw a car driven by Michael Lamar Brewer veer off an off-ramp into several trees and catch fire. He ran to the car, smashed the windshield and got Brewer, the car's lone occupant, out of the car.
Duckers was hospitalized for minor injuries to his hand and arm and released. Brewer is still in the hospital and charged with felony driving with a suspended license, no seat belt and careless driver.
A driver who stopped to help told Bay News 9, "I think he was great, he went up to the car, it was on fire, he dragged the guy out," said Douglas Donlon. "I think it was awesome actions by him."
