TOMS RIVER — An 81-year-old man was killed while walking his dog across the street Saturday night.

According to police, Joseph Bartolotta left his home at 7:20 p.m. to walk his Jack Russell Terrier when he was hit by 19-year-old Nicholas Franklin, also of Toms River. Bartolotta was taken by helicopter to a hospital where police say he died overnight.

The dog was also injured during the incident, but there was no word on its condition as of Sunday night.

The incident is being investigated by the Toms River Police Department as well as the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department.

As of Sunday night no charges had been filed.
