For weeks, even years , all we hear after Giants seasons come to an end is whether or not head coach Tom Coughlin should be fired. Well today he resigned. Here’s a little twist for you. Instead of resigning, Coughlin should have fired the Giants.

It would never happen because you’re never going to find a better soldier who bleeds big blue than Coughlin but after what he’s been through trying to win with a roster devoid of talent except for Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr., I think he deserves better than to end up resigning. In fact, in past season when he coached teams with better talent on the roster, he not only wins but wins Super Bowls when you least expect it to happen.

One example of Coughlin's coaching talents would be back in 2011, when the Eagles were considered the “Dream Team” and they added Giants starting wide receiver Steve Smith. Coughlin used replacement wide receiver Victor Cruz to fill the void. While Steve Smith never made a name for himself in Philly, Cruz proceeded to become a fan favorite with the Giants. That same season, Cruz helped beat the Jets with a 99-yard touchdown reception in a must-win game.

When Coughlin has the players, he wins, unfortunately management just stopped getting him the players he needed the last couple of years. The players that they acquire usually ended up on injured reserve. The Giants have either lead the league or have been near the top the last couple of years in that category.

Now that Coughlin's available, he’ll arguably be the top coaching candidate if he still wants to coach. Who wouldn’t want a coach who has won two Super Bowls and has his team totally prepared in every way? How could you not want a coach whose team plays for him right up until the end regardless of the finish?

I can think of a few places right off the bat where Coughlin would be a great fit. One would be the Miami Dolphins, where he could not only bring stability to that franchise but has shown a propensity to beat Bill Belichick when it counts the most. All those transplanted Giants fans down in Miami would come out for Coughlin. He did take Jacksonville to the championship game in 1996 and 1999. In fact In 2011 (after selling the Jaguars to Shahid Khan) Wayne Weaver said when looking back on his tenure as owner, one of his biggest regrets was firing Coughlin.

Another place Coughlin could end up if he doesn’t want to deal with the hassles of coaching could be offensive coordinator of the Patriots. That’s one way Belichick can make sure Coughlin doesn’t beat him in another Super Bowl. The New England gig would only become available though if current offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel gets a job elsewhere. Not all head coaches would be alright stepping down to an offensive coordinator role but it’s another thing if you’re among friends and working with Tom Brady.
So you see, whether or not the Giants know it, they are very lucky to have had a coach as good as Coughlin. To keep Coughlin, all they had to do was get him the players he needed. For that, I would be taking a long hard look at the Giants' general manager who may live to regret losing Coughlin.
