The Burlington County Bridge Commission approved the increase on Wednesday night, saying the money is needed to pay for $110 million in capital improvements.

The increase means tolls for cars, motorcycles and light trucks will go from $2 to $4 for cash customers, and from $2 to $3 for E-ZPass motorists.

Pickup trucks, buses and motor homes will be charged $6 cash, up from $4.50. Drivers of six-axle trucks would pay $9 more in cash.

The higher tolls are expected to take effect on Sept. 15.
