Power Outages Follow Thunderstorms In North Jersey

Severe thunderstorms across New Jersey on Thursday night have led to large power outages.

LATEST:

10:19 p.m. - According to the New Jersey Office Of Emergency Managment 40,000 are in the dark. PSE & G’s outage map shows several thousand without power while JCP & L has 11,000 customers without power mostly in Warren and Sussex counties. The utility says they are  ”are assessing the damage & have activated storm restoration plans.”

3:20 p.m. - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for all of New Jersey. There is currently a strong cell in Ocean County near Jackson heading to the northeast with very heavy rain and frequent lightning.

11:56: A line of thunderstorms with heavy rain, frequent lightning, 60 MPH winds and one-inch hail has promtped a Severe Thunderstorms Warning to be issued for Hunterdon, Morris and Somerset until 12:30 p.m.The storm’s track:

Somerville around 11:45 AM
Far Hills and Martinsville around 11:50 am…
Mendham around 11:55 am
Mlilington and Basking Ridge around 12 noon
Morristown around 12:10 pm
Madison around 12:15 p.m.


EARLIER

A storm popped up in Hunterdon County on Thursday morning with heavy rain that prompted a Flash Flood Warning to be issued until 11:30 a.m. for rain as the storm remained in the same area for several hours.

More storms will develop in the afternoon as a cold front moves in from the northwest taking away the humidity of the past several days with temperatures dropping down to the 70s during the weekend.

The Storm Prediction Center has all of New Jersey at slight risk for severe storms.
