July 25th, 1970 - The Carpenters start a four week run at No.1 on the singles chart with 'Close To You'. It's the first of three No.1's and 17 other Top 40 hits. The song was originally written for Herb Alpert, but he said he didn't feel comfortable singing the line 'so they sprinkled moon dust in your hair'.

July 26th, 1986Peter Gabriel hits No. 1 with ‘Sledgehammer’. Its music video will go on to win a number of awards, including a record nine MTV Awards at the ’87 MTV Video Music Awards.

July 27th, 1986Queen becomes the first western act to play in Eastern Europe in over 20 years when they preformed in Budapest’s Nepstadion, Hungary. It was Louis Armstong in 1964 who was there last. Queen’s show was filmed and released as ‘Queen Magic in Budapest’.

July 28th, 1964 – On their second visit to Sweden, both Paul McCartney and John Lennon get shocked from ungrounded mics while playing shows at a hockey arena in Stockholm.

July 29th, 1990 - Elton John checks himself into a health center in Chicago seeking help with an addiction problem and bulimia. He would take over a year off from touring and recording while he got better.

July 30th, 1974 - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band plays at The Troubadour in L.A. Also playing that night is Roger McGuinn from The Byrds.

July 31st, 1971 - James Taylor goes to No.1 on the singles chart with the Carole King song 'You Got A Friend'. The song would go on to win the 1971 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal male Performance and also Song Of The Year.
