1960 - Elvis Presley arrives in America following his Army stint in Germany. He lands during a snowstorm at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey at 7:42 a.m. The first person to welcome him back as he steps off the plane is Nancy Sinatra.

1979 - The Bee Gees scored their fourth UK No.1 single with 'Tragedy.' Also today The Bee Gees went to No.1 on the US album chat with 'Spirits Having Flown', the brothers second US No.1 album.

1983 - A member of Hell's Angels testifies to a Senate judiciary panel. He says the infamous motorcycle gang's California chapter has had a murder contract out on Mick Jagger for the past 14 years and has tried to kill him twice.

2004 - Elton John announced he was planning to marry his long-term partner David Furnish if new UK laws allowed it. A Civil Partnership bill was being passed through Parliament which would give gay couple's greater rights.
