The war is over: Uber can stay in Newark

NEWARK — This city's mayor says he's reached a deal with ride-hailing company Uber to operate in New Jersey's largest city.

In an emailed statement, Mayor Ras Baraka said the tentative agreement will keep Uber in Newark while protecting the existing taxi and limousine industry.

The city and Uber had been in a public dispute recently over taxes, licensing and background checks.

In February, Newark officials said the city would start ticketing or towing Uber drivers who operated at the train station or airport, but the ban was shelved.

California-based Uber has operated largely unregulated in the state in recent years. It claims it has about 15,000 independent contractor drivers in New Jersey.
