Here's a bit of classic sports trivia and vintage footage even some diehard baseball fans don't know about — and it happened in my town of Long Branch!

In 1938, the Acerra brothers of Long Branch, New Jersey — all 12 of them, ranging in ages from 7 to 32 — formed an all-brother team: the Acerras. All-brother teams were not that rare back then, but the Acerras had the distinction of being the longest playing all-brother team in history.

The Acerras became quite famous, appearing at the 1939 World’s Fair and winning the Long Branch City League Championship for ten consecutive years. They were eventually inducted into the Long Branch High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Six of the brothers saw combat during World War II, and the team was honored in a special ceremony at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

They're also the subject of a book, called "Brothers At Bat, The True Story of an Amazing All-Brother Baseball Team" by Audrey Vernick. The last remaining brother, Edward J. Acerra, 87, a lifelong resident of Long Branch died on January 15, 2014 at the age of 87.
