SPOTSWOOD — The local police department got a little bigger on Monday by swearing in their smallest officer.

During a special ceremony, the Spotswood Police Department swore in 2-year-old Officer Trent Powers, a local child who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which is an incurable disease.

While he may not be ready to hit the streets in his own patrol car, Powers was given an authentic uniform, and Badge #50 by the department "so he can ride in his big wheels Police Tahoe," the department said. Just like his fellow officers, Powers' ride comes with lights and sirens so he can make sure everyone follows the rules of the playground.

Along with the Spotswood department, Powers' swearing in was celebrated with the Helmetta Police Department, PBA Local 225, the East Brunswick PBA and the South River Police Department. As part of Monday's ceremony, a $3,000 donation was made to Powers Promise, a fund the family started to help raise awareness about the condition.
