People spend all kinds of money on a simple mailbox. Mailboxes that look like lighthouses, horses, dolphins, golf balls, and everything else under the sun. Some profess their love and loyalty to certain sports teams. My wife wants to get a Denver Broncos mailbox. The one she looked at is close to $100 so we took a pass for now.

For all this mailbox showboating, sometimes it isn't the mailbox itself but the way it's mounted that makes all the difference. I now would like to introduce you to the coolest mailbox in all of New Jersey.

Cool mailbox

I was out for a walk in my neighborhood when I came across this bad boy. Nothing fancy. Just a basic black mailbox on one of those streets where all mailboxes are on the same side of the street. So this particular homeowner has to walk across the street to get their mail.

But look what they mounted it on. This is a real fire hydrant as far as I can tell. How on earth was this allowed? Not that I'm complaining. This is like the ultimate life hack. Did they go through the city and was permission actually granted for mounting a mailbox on top of a fire hydrant? I'd love to think they just went rogue and did it themselves in the middle of the night with Mission Impossible theme music playing.

Hey, whatever works. But I hope that thing never springs a leak when their state refund check is in the box above it.
