‘Texting While Driving’ Signs Now Law

Gov. Chris Christie has signed legislation that orders the installation of signs throughout New Jersey to remind drivers not to text and drive.

The measure, known as “Nikki’s Law,” is named after Nikki Kellenyi, an 18-year-old Washington Township resident who was killed in an April 2012 vehicle crash.

Gloucester County authorities have said Kellenyi was a backseat passenger in a car that crashed into a pickup truck. Two other people in the car survived the accident.

Investigators have said it was “inconclusive” whether or not illegal cell phone use played a role in the accident. But the crash spurred Kellenyi family to start a nonprofit group to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.
