Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says four other people were hurt in the crash, which occurred around 11:10 p.m. Saturday on Broughton Avenue in Bloomfield.

Sixteen-year-old Christina Lembo of Bloomfield, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later. Details on the injuries suffered by the four other people were not disclosed, but authorities say none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

Lembo, a junior, played soccer for the Bloomfield High School girls team according to the Patch of Bloomfield.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Bloomfield's school superintendent Jason Bing says grief counselors have already been made available to members of the boys and girls soccer teams and to the rest of the student body on Monday. "On Monday, BHS will have counselors, coaches and teachers prepared to assist  students as they work through their grief, anger and sadness,” Bing said. "They will also be working with the Traumatic Loss Coalition.
