Jason Castle says he's disappointed the invitation was withdrawn after Teaneck Township Manager William Broughton contacted the Teaneck Patriotic Observances Committee. Castle served in the Marines and chairs an opposition group affiliated with a former councilwoman.

The Record newspaper reports Broughton was unapologetic about his decision at Tuesday's council meeting.

Broughton said while he appreciates Castle's service, he believes Castle would not be an appropriate speaker because of his criticism of the council.

The council overwhelmingly rejected a vote to extend a second invitation.

Castle says he had no intention of speaking about politics during next month's event.
