Teams Pitch 41 Ideas To Protect NY, NJ Coastlines

Ten teams participating in a federal design competition have come up with 41 projects they say could better protect the New York and New Jersey coastlines from the type of flooding seen during Superstorm Sandy.

The ideas range from protective breakwaters and marshland, to a system of channels for floodwaters on Long Island’s bays, to a huge water collection basin in Manhattan.

One design predicts a future where rising seas put a lot of New Jersey’s barrier islands underwater by 2080. That could lead to the relocation of seaside amusement parks to barges.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan is to select one idea from each team for further work.

Rockefeller Foundation President Judith Rodin (ROH’-dihn) says the competition is part of an effort to “revolutionize” coastal planning.
