Tomorrow, New Jersey’s General Assembly will vote on a bill to bar minors from using indoor tanning facilities. They would still be able to purchase spray tans. The State Senate has already approved the measure so, if it passes the People’s House tomorrow it will go to Governor Chris Christie’s desk for his signature.

Currently, kids under 18 can use tanning beds, but only with the approval of their parents or guardians. Advocates for the stricter law say recent studies show that the use of indoor tanning beds presents a significant and avoidable risk factor for cancer.

A 2009 report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer elevated ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds to the highest cancer risk category, in the same class as tobacco and asbestos.
