New Jersey has been able to reduce its unemployment insurance tab to the federal government partly because of a crackdown on fraud. The state says it's nabbing an average of 2,000 people a week who return to work but continue to collect benefits.
A safety net for tens of thousands of New Jersey residents could soon vanish, if Congress does not act before the end of the year to extend unemployment benefits for those out of work between 26 and 99 weeks.
The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in nine months, that latest evidence that the job market is improving.
