Thirty-six years ago this week, The Carpenters were at No. 2 on the singles chart with their version of a jingle from a bank advertisement.

Take a stroll down memory lane and see what happened this week in music history, July 23-29.

October 10th, 1970 – A song originally written for a bank advertisement makes its way to No.2 on the singles chart today. The Carpenters had re-recorded ‘We’ve Only Just Begun,’ first done by Freddie Allen. The successful ad played Allen’s version over footage of a young couple getting married and was made for Crocker National Bank in California.

July 25th, 1970 - The Carpenters start a four week run at No.1 on the singles chart with 'Close To You'. It's the first of three No.1's and 17 other Top 40 hits.

October 4th, 1970 – Janis Joplin is found dead on the floor beside her bed at the Landmark Hotel in Hollywood California. The official cause of death was an overdose of heroin, possibly combined with the effects of alcohol.

October 5th, 1967 – The Doors play the final show of a five night run at Steve Paul’s “The Scene” in New York City. Steve Paul, owner of The Scene, and notable as the one-time manager of Johnny Winter, refused to pay protection money to the Mafia...
