Known for years as the most dangerous road in New Jersey, Route 130 in Burlington County appears to have become a safer place for drivers and pedestrians.
In an effort to lower New Jersey's 14th-place ranking in nationwide pedestrian fatalities, the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority has kicked off its new "Street Smart" pilot program, designed to raise public awareness about how to stay safe on the state's roads.

After all the public awareness campaigns and changes to law, pedestrian deaths in the Garden State are actually slightly higher than the year before. A report from the Tri-State Transportation Campaign found 440 pedestrians died on Jersey roads from 2009 to 2011, up from 436 killed from 2008 to 2010.
