State police say department guidelines may allow troopers to escort a caravan of luxury sports cars on state highways.

The leader of New Jersey's police force is saddened that a veteran trooper's career will likely be defined by a probe into an unauthorized police escort of a caravan of sports cars.

In what one frightened witness dubbed "Death Race 2012", a large pack of high end sports cars tore down the Garden State Parkway in broad daylight among an unsuspecting motoring public and using an apparently illegal, unauthorized state police escort reached speeds of well over 100 mph.

Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa says his agency acted swiftly in its investigation of an unauthorized high-speed police escort of sports cars to Atlantic City because public safety was put at risk.
