Thanksgiving Eve has become the biggest party night of the year, right up there with New Years Eve.  Thousands of college students and family members who have moved away, have come home to New Jersey and will gather at friends houses.  Thousands will be hanging out at Garden State bars and nightclubs.

Today has become knows by some as "Black Wednesday" as many drink to the point where they "black-out"!

New Jersey State Police and local police departments will have extra roving patrol cars on Jersey roadways tonight looking for drunken drivers.  The State Police stated that there were 5 highway deaths over the Thanksgiving Weekend last year in New Jersey.  Four of the deaths have been attributed to alcohol abuse.

There will also be DWI checkpoints this weekend:

  • Tonight a DWI checkpoint will be stationed from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m. Thursday on Route 9 North in Howell. Task force members will pull drivers into the Regal Plaza parking lot.
  • Tonight the Monmouth County DWI Task Force will have patrols in Ocean Township and Brielle
  • Friday night until 3 a.m. Saturday, another checkpoint will be held in Middletown. The northbound side of Route 35 on Coopers Bridge.  Drivers into the Hudson City Savings Bank to determine their sobriety.

Those are the only published checkpoints, but there will be hundreds of other checkpoints throughout the state tonight.  Don't drink and drive!  Take a cab, designate a driver, buckle up and report impaired drivers.  Don't let a night of fun turn into a nightmare.
