The most recent case was this week in South Brunswick where EMS crews treated a 22-year-old woman. She was found lying on the ground shaking uncontrollably, convulsing and vomiting after smoking synthetic marijuana at her home.

Other cases were reported in Monmouth, Morris, Mercer, Bergen, Warren, Camden, Passaic, Union and Hudson counties.

The New Jersey Poison Information and Education System issued the warning against the use of products such as Spice and K2 because of reactions such as severe agitation, seizures, renal failure and aggressive behavior. Long term affects include breathing problems, cognitive impairment and psychosis. It's not known what in the product is making users sick.

"The bottom line is it's very, very dangerous. It's dangerous stuff that could kill," Dr. Steven Marcus, the executive director and medical director of the poison information system, told the Asbury Park Press "This is not just a strong version of marijuana."

Earlier, New Jersey State Police issued a similar warning after 400 cases along the east coast were reported.  25 non-fatal overdoses alone between April 15 and April 19 in the area of Newark Penn Station according to state police.

The product is used by being sprayed onto incense or a herbal base that can be smoked according to the Morning Call of Allentown.

The cases in New Jersey are similar to those just over the border in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley where 39 cases have been reported in the past week. In some cases those affected were using alcohol including one being intubated.
