Route 78 commuters started the week with an overturned vehicle that closed the eastbound lanes in Somerset County.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Flynn said according to the preliminary investigation, a woman driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer crossed the median near exit #40 for County Route 531 in Warren Township, overturned on the westbound side and was ejected from the vehicle. It is not known what caused the driver to lose control, according to Flynn.

The woman, whose identity was not disclosed by Flynn, was the only person in the car. She was taken via medical helicopter to Morristown Medical Center for serious injuries.

The roadway was closed for a time to allow the helicopter to land, causing a delay of over 10 miles that started before Route 287. A westbound rubbernecking delay developed as well.

As of 9:20 a.m., two lanes remained blocked on the eastbound side for a police investigation.
