Suspect Injured In Hawaiian High School Incident

Authorities say shots were fired at a Hawaii high school, causing injuries and prompting a lockdown.

Honolulu Department of Emergency Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the shooting happened Tuesday morning at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu.

A tweet from @Breaking911 shows police responding to the morning incident.

KHON 2 reports that the gunman has been taken into custody. The victim, a 17-year-old boy, has been hospitalized in serious condition with a gunshot to the wrist.

Police went to the school to pick up a runaway who allegedly pulled a knife on an officer, stabbing him in the chest according to Hawaii News Now, which reported the knife did not go through the officer’s bulletproof vest. The station reports the officer’s partner fired shots at the runaway.

The teen faces three counts of attempted murder.

An official who answered the phone at the school says the school is locked down.

About a half-dozen parents, including Carolyn Richardson, gathered outside the school after word of the shooting spread.

“This is really freaking me out,” Richardson told The Associated Press.

Richardson said she learned about it around 9 a.m. through a text from her son, CarDarow, a sophomore.

Her son told her he heard that shots had been fired at the school, but that he was unharmed. She then used her cellphone to video chat with her son.

“I told him, I gotta hear your voice,” Richardson said.

Other parents outside the school also texted and talked on their phones to their children.

Police and Department of Education officials didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment from The Associated Press.
