LAKEWOOD — After a woman riding her bicycle was killed by a motorist in Lakewood on Friday night, police were able to locate the man believed to be responsible a short time after fleeing the scene.

The woman, who was not identified, was struck while traveling on Cedarbridge Ave. near South Clover street. Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said she suffered severe head injuries and other issues when she was taken to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus before she died.

An investigation showed that the woman was hit by a Toyota 4Runner with out of state plates. Det. Brad Frank from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office reported finding the vehicle at an apartment complex in Brick. Items in the car led police to Andres Govea Montoya who was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and causing death while driving with a suspended license. He then taken to the Ocean County Jail.

Along with the Lakewood Police Department the accident investigation included the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department CSI. Staffordsmith said the investigation is ongoing.
