The person who catches the largest fish during the event gets his/her name engraved on the Governor's Cup, which is permanently displayed at the park. Fishing equipment prizes are also lined up for other competitions.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the tournament is also a fundraiser for worthwhile causes, including the purchase of specialized wheelchairs to provide beach access to disabled and elderly persons, surf fishing instruction programs and equipment, and marine education and restoration efforts.

Anglers from New Jersey and neighboring states are expected to compete. Registration is $20 for persons 18 and older, $5 for ages 13 to 17, and free for those 12 and under.
