New Jersey has so much to offer year 'round, especially during the Summer.

If you spend your weekends or vacations at the shore, or maybe at some the Garden State's great inland locations or just in your backyard, there are some dangers lurking.

One of the most obvious threats is the water.

Our 131 mile coastline is a jewel.  Perhaps a backyard pool fits your taste.

Here are a few tips about water safety.

Please, don't even think about swimming in the ocean if a lifeguard is not on duty.

In the ocean or a pool, always swim with a friend.  If one of you runs into trouble, there will be someone who can call for help.

The American Red Cross recommends that children and inexperienced swimmers were U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets.

Always maintain constant supervision of children.

If a child is unaccounted for, always check the water first.

A reminder.  During the Summer months listen to the Shore Reports on New Jersey 101.5.  We will give you a heads up about those dangerous rip currents.

Are you planning to take advantage of some of our wonderful hiking trails or camping out?

If you are, protect yourself and your family from ticks.

These insects cause a variety of illnesses including Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

While you're around vegetation wear long sleeves and long pants that are tucked into your socks.

Perform tick checks everyday.  If your dog is with you, check your pet too.

And, always apply tick repellent spray several times a day.

Use that sunscreen.

This applies to the beaches and inland locations.

Sure, for the ultimate protection from the rays you can wear protective clothing and a wide brimmed hat.  That may not be practical or fun.

Dermatologists strongly advise to use UVA and UVB sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15.  The sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going out into the sun and re-applied every two hours.

Some leafy plants can cause some harm.

Yes, you guessed it.  Poison ivy, Oak, and Sumac can cause some nasty allergic reactions.

Avoid bushy, overgrown areas.  Same as with ticks, wear long sleeves and pants.

Here are a few more Summer safety suggestions to keep in mind.

*  While exposed to the Summer heat, always stay hydrated.  Drink plenty of water, not alcohol or caffeine.

*  While barbequing, never let the kids near the grill.  As we know, it will stay hot long after the food is cooked.

*  Avoid leaving perishable foods unrefrigerated.

Finally,

*  While you and the kids go for a bike ride, wear that helmet.  If you''ll be peddling after dark, make sure you have one of those nifty strobe lights or good reflective tape so approaching vehicles will see you.

Happy and safe.  That's what Summer is all about.
