Sued Sandy Charity Ordered to Freeze Donations
A purported Superstorm Sandy charity under investigation by New Jersey authorities has been barred from soliciting additional donations.
Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced Thursday that the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation and operators John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino also must put more than $600,000 already received into an escrow account, and post notices on Facebook and Twitter accounts that the charity is not a tax-exempt organization.
New Jersey sued Sandberg and Terraccino last week for allegedly using donated funds for personal use and failing to properly register as a charity.
The Sparta residents are accused of transferring more than $13,000 in donations into personal accounts and paying $8,000 to a credit card company for personal expenses.
It wasn’t known if Sandberg and Terraccino had retained an attorney.
