A line of strong storms that moved through New Jersey left extensive damage, power outages and fallen trees in its wake as it moved out of the area.

The storms followed severe thunderstorm watches and warnings throughout much of the state as well as a tornado warning issued Thursday afternoon for portions of central Warren County.

According to NJ State Police, the high winds caused downed trees on the southbound side of I-287, which resulted in a partial lane closure, leaving only the left lane open to traffic as the evening commute continued to build. In addition, authorities said Exit 35 southbound was also closed. State police advised commuters to expect delays or plan alternate routes.

In White Township, Warren County, a farmer working in his field escaped what he believes was a tornado that caused extensive damage to his barn. Tom Smith was cutting hay when he saw "that black cloud coming across the field and it was turning. It was twisting," Smith told LehighValleyLive.com. The farmer said he was alone on the 20-acre farm on Route 519 when the storm hit, forcing him to take cover under the front porch of his home, the article states.

Although a tornado warning had been issued minutes earlier by the National Weather service, officials have not yet confirmed whether or not an actual tornado touched down in the area.
