Another piece of my Jersey childhood disappeared last week when Joey Harrison’s Surf Club was destroyed.

Actually it was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy , but when I was growing up in Union City, every summer my family would rent the house located at 20 5th ave, right down the block from the Surf Club. One of the guys who ran it Marty Seglio was one of my father’s best friends.

When I graduated high school I rented that same house with some friends including Glenn Stuart from the B Street Band. I remember running into Marty when we were having breakfast one morning after sleeping al night on the beach.

Some of my best summer memories come from being down in Ortley Beach. My memories included everything from having a burger and fries on the beach as a child to getting rejected as a teen trying to get into the Surf Club. Club owner Joseph Barcellona Sr. insisted after Sandy that the club would be rebuilt. Here’s hoping he’s able to make that happen at some point.
