The attorney general's office's shooting response team says a preliminary investigation shows Isaiah Roberts was to meet with undercover agents behind a Rite Aid pharmacy in Sayreville Thursday.

When the 38-year-old Parlin resident saw officers approaching he tried to flee, but allegedly struck an unmarked police vehicle and a detective from the Middlesex County prosecutor's office.

A Perth Amboy police officer assigned to the prosecutor's office fired a rifle at Roberts but didn't hit him.

Roberts is being held on $500,000 bail and is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, eluding and a weapons offense. The prosecutor's office was filing drug charges.

It wasn't known if he'd retained an attorney.
