EAST GREENWICH TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- State police say two people were killed and three were injured when two cars collided on an interstate highway in southern New Jersey.

The crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes on a stretch of I-295 in East Greenwich Township, was reported around 8:20 a.m. Sunday.

A preliminary investigation found that a Lexus traveling in the center lane apparently struck an Acura in the left lane, sending the Acura into a guardrail.

The driver and the front-seat passenger in the Acura were killed, while a backseat passenger in that car and two people in the Lexus were injured and taken to hospitals.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation remains ongoing.

The accident cause major traffic backups in the area for a few hours.
