Prosecutors say a Toms River  man stabbed a woman with a knife during a New Year's Eve party in Lakewood and then used it to stab himself.

Attempted murder and weapons charges were filed against 63-year-old Robert Hankins of Toms River. His bail was set at $250,000, and further details on the injuries he and the victim suffered were not disclosed.

It's not yet clear what sparked the stabbings, which happened shortly before midnight Saturday at an American Legion Post in Lakewood.

Michael Paulhus, Ocean County's executive assistant prosecutor, tells the Asbury Park Press that witnesses said Hankins approached the woman and cut her throat, then stabbed himself in the throat

No other injuries were reported.

It wasn't known Sunday if Hankins had retained an attorney.
