Springsteen Performs Pop Hit in Concert

Bruce Springsteen added a pop hit to the set list in his final New Zealand concert by performing the song “Royals.”

The acoustic performance was caught on tape and played by NBC’s “Today” show on Sunday morning and by Springsteen aficionado Tom Cunningham on his weekly “Bruce Brunch” program on 105.7 The Hawk.

During the High Hopes tour in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Springsteen has performed songs native to the country. “It’s his way of paying homage to the country he’s in,” explains Cunningham, who has been a diehard Springsteen fan since he was 16-years-old.

Springsteen changed the lyrics to the song performed by New Zealand’s Lordes to “king bee” instead of “queen bee” during the performance at Auckland’s Mt. Smart Stadium in only his second live appearance there ever according to Rolling Stone.

Other songs getting the Springsteen treatment during the tour include AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” performed with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, INXS’s “Don’t Change” and even “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. “Clearly a sign he has lost his mind.” laughed Cunningham.

The High Hopes tour hits the states in April with the first show in Cincinnati on the April 8. The only announced show closest to New Jersey is May 14 at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania. “I expect him to announce shows in both New Jersey and Philadelphia,” said Cunningham.
