WAYNE — A man made an unexpected and potentially dangerous discovery while doing some spring cleaning over the weekend.

The man found a Japanese-style World War II hand grenade in his basement and then took it the trunk of his car to police headquarters on Monday morning. That prompted the Passaic County Bomb Squad to be brought in, according to Wayne police spokesman Capt. Laurence Martin.

Martin said Wayne Valley High School, located next to police headquarters, was put on lockdown at 9:25 a.m. as members of the bomb squad worked on the bomb and removed it from the area.

The lockdown was lifted around 10:10 a.m.

Two torpedoes were found buried at a South Toms River building construction early in March.
