Harrington Park police tell The Record the 8-year-old Northvale boy was sliding into third base Saturday when the ball hit him just above the heart. Witnesses said the boy's eyes rolled back into his head and he stopped breathing.

A woman watching the game came to the boy's aid and soon revived him, and he was conscious and alert when paramedics arrived.

“I just saw this beautiful child on the ground, his eyes were wide-open, his lips were turning a little blue,” she told the newspaper. “I put my hand on his chest, and I didn’t feel anything.”

The child was flown to Hackensack University Medical Center, but further details on his condition were not available.
